Easy Healthier Sloppy Joes Recipe
Ingredients
For the Filling:
- 2 pounds lean ground turkey
- 1 onion finely diced
- 1 carrot grated
- 1 zucchini grated and squeezed dry
- 2 cloves garlic minced
- 1 can tomato sauce 15 oz
- 1/2 cup ketchup
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- Salt to taste
For Serving:
- 6 whole wheat hamburger buns
- Sliced pickles optional
- Sliced onions optional
- Shredded lettuce optional
Instructions
- Heat large skillet over medium heat.
- Add ground turkey, break up while cooking until no longer pink.
- Add onion, grated carrot, zucchini, and garlic. Cook 5 minutes.
- Stir in tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, and seasonings.
- Simmer 10-15 minutes until thickened.
- Toast buns if desired.
- Pile meat mixture onto buns and add toppings.
